The year 2008 ended with the big success of the project: “Violence against Women: Rights-based approach to improve the rights for migrant women who are affected by violence”. 11 Self-help groups were established, gathered 120 migrant women into these groups. These Self-help groups held 5 communication sessions about domestic violence prevention at 5 districts in Hanoi.
The success of the project suggested us to continue the second phase of the project. In this second phase, we continue giving support to migrant women who are affected by gender-based violence. This project continues to provide these women with psychological counseling and medical care, and at the same time, organize communication campaigns in the large scale about gender-based violence in Hanoi. However, phase 2 will attract the participation of men in preventing domestic violence. Detailed information of the project is as follows:

| Objectives of the action |
The overall objective is to contribute to national efforts in reducing violence against women, improving the protection and support of women who have experienced violence. The specific objectives are: 1. To empower migrant women affected by violence to speak out and raise awareness of violence against women, strengthening policy development and implementation. 2. To increase psychosocial support for migrant women affected by violence. 3. To ensure policy development and implementation is based on proven, effective methods with direct involvement and participation of women affected by violence. 4. To increase awareness and skills among men to adopt and advocate alternative non-violent models of masculinity.

1. Women affected by violence in Viet Nam will have improved access to their right to autonomy over their own bodies and the right to be free from violence and discrimination 2. Women will meet with peers and group leaders who have had similar experiences, reducing the shame and isolation associated with violence and improving self-esteem and life skills 3. Women will gain improved self-esteem and life skills through facilitated meetings by group leaders who have received significant training prior to establishment of the group 4. Women affected by violence will have increased knowledge regarding and access to non-judgemental support and treatment options in Hanoi and HCMC 5. Health services will be valued and better utilised by the community, especially women affected by violence 6. Women affected by violence and men will actively participate in the development of behaviour-change communications and awareness raising activities 7. Stigma against women affected by violence in selected Hanoi and HCMC communities will be reduced 8. Project partners will better address the needs of women affected by violence having the involvement and participation of women affected by violence 9. Economic opportunities for women in desperate situations will be improved 10. Stronger linkages will be made between policy makers, local authorities, service providers and women affected by violence, through opportunities for dialogue and advocacy 11. Awareness will be raised and skills obtained to adopt alternative non-violent forms of masculinity among select men in Hanoi and HCMC

4.Support lesbians and promote the participation of men in improving gender equality and domestic violence prevention in Vietnam (February 2011 – September – 2013) funded by the Embassy of Sweden 5. Improve the capacity of officers and attract the participation of men in implementing the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control at Canh Nau and Di Nau communes, Thach That, Hanoi (Auguts 2011 – December 2011) Funder: Canada Fund Objectives: - Regulations to treat violators of the DV Law and the model to support survivors of domestic violence are implemented at Canh Nau and Di Nau communes - Men participating in the process of implementing the DV Law 6.Uphold the strength of the cooperative community in domestic violence prevention at Tuong Duong and Ky Son districts, Nghe An province (June 2011 – May 2013) Funder: Oxfam Hongkong Objectives: - Unions, offices, government and community have enough ability and effective cooperation in supporting and solving domestic violence - Survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence can access available support services in localities

State management offices about communication have clear orientation and action plans in increasing gender sensitivity in communication offices 2. Pro-active communication offices increase the number and quantity of gender sensitive communication programs 3. Pro-active communication offices build policies, mechanism and measures to put into effect the commitment of increasing gender sensitivity in re-mechanizing the organization and producing gender sensitive products in their units
Older PROMOTION OF LGBT’S RIGHTS AND INCREASING MEN’S PARTICIPATION IN GENDER EQUALITY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PREVENTION IN VIETNAM (Phase II from 2011 to 2013) In the component of “enhancing the implementation of the rights of lesbians”, the project has connected with lesbian communities in Hanoi, creating confidence for them via direct support acitivities such as counseling, exhibitions, participation in research groups, idea contribution, or co-writer of books. The project outcomed many impressive products for homosexual people, especially the autobiography of “Real Life, True Happiness”. The project “Increasing capacity for local officials on enforcing the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence” in Thach That District - Hanoi Project RVNA72 – Working with Vietnamese media to challenge gender stereotypes, from 2011 to 2013 (Fund from OGB) This project was in cooperation with media agencies to explore their potentials to change related policies, thoughts, belief and perception of those who have been working on media field – in a process of challenging all the existing gender stereotype in their production, which were considered one of the main elements obstructing our women from their obvious rights. Cooperating with media agencies was also to guarantee that they would be a part of the solution, not a tool to consolidate gender prejudice as today. |
